Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein review

I have been using this protein powder for over a year now and I love it. I love how there are 90 servings which means I don’t have to buy it so frequently. I’m also a fan of the zipper pouch. It’s easy to open and close, and a lot easier to store in my kitchen than a bulky plastic container. I tried vanilla and chocolate, and I will definitely be sticking to chocolate from now on. It tastes so much better especially if you are mixing it with cold water. I also find that the chocolate protein is easier to mix than the vanilla. I typically just use a fork to mix it in (too lazy to reach for the shaker and don’t want to do extra dishes).

RE: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein review

Good quality protein, taste could be better, foams

Pros: Supposedly excellent quality protein Blends well

Cons: The taste needs help (more below) Foams excessively when blended

I’ve consumed most of a 90 serving bag of the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey protein in Vanilla flavor immediately after coming home from the gym.

Initially I tried mixing it with cold water in a shaker bottle. It mixed very well. However, the taste is far from great. I typically now only mix it with unsweetened Almond milk, and that definitely helps, but it still needs help.

I usually make a smoothie using this in a Nutri Ninja. I’ve blended it with a variety of other items. Depending on the season and what I have in the house I’ve used strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, kale, bananas, peanut butter powder, peanut butter, and probably other stuff. My most common item is a banana, and I usually add between half and a whole banana. I usually add some ice as well.

Recently I started adding ground cinnamon. That helps a LOT. Cinnamon, Almond milk, ice, and the protein powder is tolerable, although other ingredients do help substantially. Again, by itself if I personally consider the taste to be pretty nasty. I’m really confused by the reviews that say it tastes great. I drink it despite the flavor, not because of it.

One thing I have found with the Nutri Ninja though is that this protein powder foams considerably. Even if I have the total ingredients well below the fill line of the Ninja cup, after blending the smoothie will gush out of the cup when I take off the blade assembly. I’ve learned to be sure to do this over a sink and slowly unscrew the blade assembly otherwise it makes a mess. I don’t have this problem with other protein powder, notably the excellent Orgain vegetable based product.

While it is hard to know exactly the benefit of the protein, I do believe it helps. This is based primarily on Whey Isolate, the most protein rich, fastest digested way of getting milk based protein. I do switch between this product and the Orgain organic vegetable based product. Personally I find the taste of the Orgain product much better. I’m not sure if the vegetable based protein is as good quality as whey based protein, thus why I switch between the products.

I typically purchase both this item and the Orgain product in the warehouse. When I finish this bag (it seems to last forever) I will likely try a different whey based product to see if the taste is superior, likely the Combat product Costco also stocks in the warehouse. The bottom line is if you can tolerate the taste, or at least mask it with other ingredients, then this is an excellent source of protein.

Seems to be a pretty good quality casein without the chalky after taste. I take this a few hours before bed time and don’t feel like its just sitting there in your stomach making you feel full.
